Pistyll Rhaeadr Walk
Pistyll Rhaeadr is one of the tallest waterfalls in Wales, located in the Berwyn Mountains. The surrounding area offers a variety of walking trails that provide stunning views and a chance to experience the natural beauty of the region. We visited on a sunny day a month back and it did not disappoint, We arrived at 12 on a Friday afternoon to find a very quiet car park (unheard of) and walked a large circular of 5 miles up the mountain to finally land back at the head of the waterfall. If you're an avid nature lover and hiker this needs to be on your visit list.
Getting There
The waterfall is near Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Powys, just inside Wales, west of Oswestry and Shrewsbury. The waterfall is accessible by car, with a car park available by the cafe at the base of the waterfall. Its advised to visit early as the car park fills very quickly and is very small as its nestled between water and fields. Parking is paid for on a parking machine and the cafe is CASH only!
Address: Tan-y-Pistyll, Waterfall Lane, Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, Powys SY10 0BZ, Wales.
Walking Trails
Main Trail - A well-marked stone/gravel path leads directly to the base of the waterfall, allowing for close-up views. There is also a little bridge to stand on but note this path beyond crossing over goes nowhere, trust me, me and Gus have attempted climbing up it.
Circular - For those looking for a longer hike, a circular route around the surrounding Berwyn mountains offers panoramic views of the valley and over every mile the view just keeps on giving!
What to Expect
Views for days - The walk features lush greenery, long grass, boggy bits, rocky terrain, stone paths and hill climbs. The views in all directions are perfect.
Wildlife - Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including various bird species and small mammals. Of course roaming welsh sheep are dotted around too!
Difficulty Level - The trails vary in difficulty, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced walkers. It's worth planning your route if you plan to do a circular but walking to the bottom of the waterfall is easy, walking to the top is an incline which winds around a few bends.
Tips for Your Visit
Footwear - Wear sturdy walking shoes or boots for comfort and safety. If you're planning on going up the mountain it can get very boggy.
Weather - Check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. We were so lucky with a sunny day and a breeze but I would give it a second thought if it was windy and rainy to trek higher to the range.
Photos - Bring a camera to capture the breathtaking views and your spontaneous dip under the falls!
Conclusion
A walk at Pistyll Rhaeadr is a rewarding experience, offering a blend of natural beauty and adventure. Whether you’re looking for a short stroll or a more challenging hike, the area has something to offer for everyone, its something I would personally enjoy for a whole day out, take a picnic and sit at the top of the waterfall and enjoy the views!
