Hey lovely one,
So, autumn is here and we're definitely noticing a change in the weather. With the cooler (hello rain) weather and darker nights rolling in, it's no wonder we're feeling a bit out of sorts. Our bodies may feel cold, tired, sluggish and our minds foggy with a hint of creativity!
When fall hits, it's all about embracing the changes instead of fighting them. Let's face it, after those glorious summer days, it's a bit of a shock to feel how cold it's getting. We catch ourselves hunching our shoulders to keep warm, feeling more aches and pains, and may be craving some comfort food.
Research actually shows that practicing self-care daily can reduce stress, boost mental and physical health, increase productivity, and fill our days with positivity and happiness. By treating ourselves with kindness and compassion, we not only benefit but also approach our work and relationships with a clear and happy mind.
ACCEPTING CHANGE
Change is a constant in life, from small tasks to the shifting seasons. It's normal to resist change, but the more we accept it, the easier it is to find peace and flexibility. Autumn brings cooler temperatures, fresh air, vibrant colours and a sense of renewal.
NATURE TIME
Being in nature can be one of the most profound healing modalities there is, anywhere in the world. For me, nature is my go to and I notice how much better I feel when I have spent time within it. Enjoy going for a 5 minute walk on your lunch break, spend a few hours outside in the garden or local woodland. Watch the birds flying over head, admire the changing leaves, make a flask of tea and lose a few hours away from busy life and admin.
SNOOZE
Feeling sluggish in the mornings? Try setting your alarm a bit earlier and hit snooze, try and resist the urge to fall back asleep (I know, I know!) but instead use this time to meditate, lay with your hands on your belly and breathe, slowly & deeply. Practice gratitude or speak out loud a few affirmations. I like to assume butterfly position and gaze out the window while massaging my face! (Rub your face in all directions with warm hands), this will get wake up your energy levels... especially rubbing up and down in front of your ears.
AUTUMN TONIC
With coughs and colds looming in the air its important to keep the body's defense systems boosted. Try to implement herbal teas into your day, ginger & honey, pine needle tea, echinacea, elderberry, elderflower are just to name a few! I have loose leaf so like to make big blends to suit the season. For a cold, elderberry is incredible, or look up elderberry tinctures to take throughout the day.
WARM WATER
Drinking warm water aids digestion better than cold water. Even cooler showers can boost immunity this time of year. And remember to keep fresh air flowing in your home, even if you've turned on the heating.
BALANCE
This season, it's all about Vata energy - cold, dry, and light. Dress warmly and opt for nourishing, easy-to-digest foods like soups and broths to keep your Vata energy balanced.
If you're craving sugar for a quick energy boost, try healthier alternatives like dates, dried fruit, or blueberries. Its also a gorgeous time of year to bake, have you tried my sweet potato brownies yet?
MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE
Moving your body daily is important and adapting your exercise routine to the seasons can be very beneficial. You will notice that as the year goes by you will feel as though your physical and emotional needs will change and need to be met in different ways. My go to this time of year is slow flow yoga and Yin, the yummiest of practices where we slow down and use cushions and blankets to prop the body within the poses. As nature slows down, you must too!
As we approach the end of the year, remember to take care of yourself.
Slow down, enjoy the journey, and prioritize self-care to stay grounded and focused.
Take it easy and embrace the season!
